(NaturalNews) The more closely our team investigates the facts about Ebola here at Natural News, the more I’m convinced the United States government is intentionally trying to increase the spread of the outbreak rather than contain it. I realize this assertion may sound outlandish, but review the evidence below and decide for yourself. This story is extensively sourced with verifiable links.

As microbiologist Dr. Gil Mobley recently said in protest of all the lies and disinformation, “CDC is lying! … [and] If they’re not lying, they are grossly incompetent.” [1]

Here are the top ten pieces of evidence that point to the U.S. government seemingly wanting to see Ebola spread even more. Because, just as Dr. Mobley says, if all this isn’t intentional, then it’s a showcase of extreme incompetence on the part of government:

#1) Obama refuses to halt air travelers from infected countries from entering the United States

Ebola “patient zero” Thomas Eric Duncan flew right into the United States and walked through the international airports of both Washington D.C. and Dallas-Fort Worth. He was never asked about his country of origin and was never screened for any health conditions.

Why are people whose flights originate in Liberia and Sierra Leone still allowed to openly travel to large U.S. cities? Shouldn’t we use the immigration and customs infrastructure already in place at international airports to reject travelers from countries where Ebola is spreading out of control?

Strangely, the United States has far more stringent requirements for cats and dogs entering the country than it does for humans. Dogs and cats must enter the country with extensive health records, but international air travelers can apparently just fly right in even if they’re infected with Ebola.

#2) Texas family is quarantined in a home that still hasn’t been cleaned or decontaminated

“More than a week after a Liberian man fell ill with Ebola and four days after he was placed in isolation at a hospital in Dallas, the apartment where he was staying with four other people had not been cleaned and the sheets and dirty towels he used while sick remained in the home, health officials acknowledged on Thursday afternoon.” – NY Times [2] and Fox News [11]

Even though the home hasn’t been cleaned or decontaminated, family members of Thomas Eric Duncan have been forced into isolation in this contaminated home and told they must submit to regular blood draws by the state.

Already, these family members escaped their isolation and began to mingle once again with the public, violating their isolation orders. The woman, Louise Troh, told reporters she is tired of being “locked up” with her family members. [3]

“Dallas officials said that relatives of the man infected with Ebola left their apartment after agreeing not to, which prompted officials to issue a confinement order overnight,” reports the LA Times. [4] “They were noncompliant with the request to stay home,” said Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins.

Isn’t it insane to force a family into quarantine in a home that’s clearly contaminated with Ebola? Doesn’t this almost prove that government authorities actually want this family to catch the disease and spread it? After all, how else could this family have been “allowed” to violate their isolation and start interacting with the public again? With hundreds (if not thousands) of CDC and Texas health authorities on location dealing with this Dallas outbreak, how could it be that not a single one of these persons was assigned to watching the Duncan household to make sure nobody left?

Cleaning of contaminated apartment delayed by government demand for a “permit”

What’s even more incredible is that the cleaning crew which was hired to sanitize the home was turned away because they were told they needed a Texas Dept. of Transportation permit to drive on state highways after cleaning the home.

“Brad Smith of the Cleaning Guys, which was hired to sanitize the apartment, said his company does not have the proper permits to transport hazardous waste on Texas highways. The company specializes in hazmat and biohazard cleaning services,” reports a local Fox affiliate. [7] “Smith said authorities sent his crew away late Thursday before they entered the apartment and told them to come back with proper permits. It’s unclear how long that will take. ‘The permit is being processed through DOT (the Department of Transportation) because it is a special permit,’ Smith said.”

In other words, a family is being forced to live in an Ebola-contaminated home while the cleaning of that home is delayed because somebody needs a permit to clean it? How insane does this get, really?

#3) The CDC continues to lie about modes of transmission for the Ebola virus

The CDC continues to ridiculously claim that Ebola only spreads through “direct contact of body fluids.” The agency continued to deny that Ebola can spread through the air for short distances and that Ebola can be acquired by touching contaminated surfaces.

The overall lie from the CDC is that Ebola is “difficult to catch.” But if that’s true, then why did so many doctors who are well trained in the prevention of infectious disease still manage to get infected? How did Dr. Kent Brantly get infected?

Even more, how did the NBC News cameraman now get infected even though he took extreme precautions to avoid touching anyone while also carefully washing his own skin and clothes each day?

“I am taking serious precautions and washing with chlorine regularly,” said Ashoka Mukpo, the 33-year-old cameraman, in a NY Daily News article. [9] Clearly this was not an individual who ran around touching infected Ebola patients. Yet he still got infected. How is this possible unless the CDC is lying?

Dr. Gil Mobley “said the CDC is ‘sugar-coating’ the risk of the virus spreading in the United States,” reports the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. [1]

Research has clearly shown that Ebola virus can ride on aerosols — airborne particles of water or spit — and infect people at a distance. [5] So why isn’t the CDC telling people the truth that Ebola can spread through the air?

And why aren’t frontline doctors and soldiers being told they need to wear full face respirators?

It’s almost as if the CDC wants this to spread in order to generate exactly the kind of pandemic panic that would generate billions of dollars in lucrative vaccine sales. They did it before, after all, with the swine flu scare. So why not use Ebola to also generate more profits for the vaccine makers?

#4) The FDA is openly threatening sellers of natural remedies that might be useful for slowing or stopping Ebola

Instead of encouraging people to boost their immune systems with nutritional therapies, natural remedies and superfoods, the FDA is actively going out of its way to threaten resellers of colloidal silver and essential oils.

Last week, the FDA threatened three companies with criminal prosecution if they didn’t take steps to dissociate their products from Ebola.

One company, the Natural Solutions Foundation, has since claimed that governments are actively seizing colloidal silver shipments to African nations in order to prevent Ebola victims from ever being treated with it. Are these authorities afraid that it might actually work?

Shouldn’t we be trying and testing every herb and natural remedy on the planet to find out how to stop Ebola? Or are we all supposed to wait around for the drug companies to manufacture an experimental vaccine and then put all our trust in that?

Doesn’t anybody realize the company testing the vaccine right now — GlaxoSmithKline — has a long criminal history of admitted felony crimes including the bribery of tens of thousands of doctors?

#5) People entering U.S. customs are not asked where they’ve been

“Yesterday, I came through international customs at the Atlanta airport,” said Dr. Gil Mobley when he recently entered the United States. “The only question they asked arriving passengers is if they had tobacco or alcohol.” – reported in the AJC. [1]

Apparently, U.S. customs is far more interested in determining whether you owe any import tax than whether you might be carrying a deadly pandemic virus. Is nobody in the U.S. government aware that an international pandemic is under way? How is it even possible that people are not being asked about their country of origin?

#6) The U.S. government knew about the outbreak in advance, but didn’t warn the public

It’s now clear that the U.S. government has long known this outbreak was coming but did nothing to warn the public.

In early September, the government sought to purchase 160,000 Ebola hazmat suits from a U.S. supplier.

Furthermore, according to this report on SHTFplan.com, “Disaster Assistance Response Teams were told to prepare to be activated in the month of October.”

Don’t you find it strange that while the government itself was gearing up for an October disaster, the public wasn’t told a thing about any of this?

#7) Even during a global pandemic outbreak, the U.S. government refuses to secure the southern U.S. border

If Ebola victims can fly into the United States, they can surely fly into Mexico, Central America and South America as well.

So why is the U.S. southern border still wide open with virtually zero security? The ability of infected Ebola victims to walk right across the border and into Texas (or other southern states) seems to be of no concern whatsoever to the Obama administration. The political goal of encouraging the maximum illegal immigration possible — and then granting amnesty to a wave of new voters — seems far more important than protecting America from a pandemic outbreak.

Many observers already believe that the mystery entero virus which has sent hundreds of U.S. children to hospitals all across the country probably entered the U.S. through the unsecured border. If Obama can send 3,000 U.S. troops to Sierra Leone, why can’t we send a few thousand enforcers to our own border with Mexico?

The insanity of leaving that border wide open during an international deadly pandemic is beyond description. This is beyond negligent; it is clearly deliberate.

#8) The government’s official advice of “don’t panic, don’t prepare” ensures a greater pandemic emergency during any outbreak

The U.S. government has actually gone out of its way to discourage the American people from taking basic preparedness precautions, long depicting preppers and survivalists as “radical elements” who might even pose a security risk to America, according to FBI warnings.

But in truth, preppers are the most calm people of all because they have nothing to fear from infrastructure disruptions, food supply shortages and even power grid failures. Preppers help keep communities safe and calm, and they’re the best positioned to help rebuild society after any pandemic.

So why does the U.S. government continue to demonize preppers? The intention, it seems, is to make sure nobody engages in preparedeness activities, thereby maximizing the victim status of the people. This, in turn, makes people more obedient to government because that’s where they must now turn for food, water, medicine and safety.

At every turn, the U.S. government seems to have encouraged victimization and actually taught people to do nothing for their own safety and preparedness. This is how nations are brought to their knees: strip away all self-reliance, then follow it up with a sweeping national catastrophe.

#9) The U.S. watched and waited, doing nothing during the original window of opportunity for halting Ebola six months ago

Ebola could have been stopped relatively easily in the spring of 2014. But even when infectious disease experts were sounding the warning many months ago, the U.S. government stood by and did nothing.

This was, in fact, a reflection of the entire international response which was lackluster at best. As Ebola ramped up into exponential growth, world political leaders were apparently too busy running for office and wooing voters to pay any attention to a deadly outbreak happening a continent away.

Obama’s dispatching of 3,000 troops long after the explosive spread of Ebola was already under way is nothing more than medical theater. The Pentagon’s ongoing construction of a reported 1,500 cots in makeshift medical tents isn’t going to make any kind of dent in a country where the CDC now estimates 1.4 million infections by the end of January.

Even worse, it exposes U.S. soldiers to a virus which we already know can be spread through the air. As Rand Paul recently asked, “Can you imagine if a whole ship full of our soldiers catch ebola?” [10]

Paul goes on to explain, “We should not underestimate the transmissibility of this… My suspicion is that it’s a lot more transmissible than that if people who are taking every precaution are getting it. There are people getting it who simply helped people get in or out of a taxicab.”

It’s hard not to consider the possibility that this was done in order to intentionally expose U.S. soldiers to Ebola, then bring them back home to spread the infection in yet more U.S. cities.

#10) The U.S. government has held the patent on Ebola since 2010

Finally, the U.S. government has claimed intellectual property ownership over the “invention” of the Ebola virus ever since 2010.

This brings up all sorts of important questions: Why did the government patent its “invention” of Ebola? Patents are filed in order to claim monopoly ownership over an invention. That’s the entire purpose of a patent, of course, and by patenting Ebola, the U.S. government is clearly stating that it believes it is the “inventor” of Ebola while seeking to restrict anyone else from using it.

Perhaps this is why Liberian scientist Dr. Cyril Broderick, Professor of Plant Pathology, believes Ebola is an engineered bioweapon. “Ebola is a genetically modified organism (GMO)” he declared in a front-page news story in the Liberian Observer. [8]

He goes on to explain:

[Horowitz] confirmed the existence of an American Military-Medical-Industry that conducts biological weapons tests under the guise of administering vaccinations to control diseases and improve the health of “black Africans overseas.”

Responding to a letter from Sen. Tom Coburn, the Department of Homeland Security — an agency that has no business being armed in the first place — says it’s buying billions of rounds of ammunition in order to “significantly lower costs.”
It’s all about saving money, you see. DHS isn’t arming up in anticipation of a shooting war on the streets of America, and it’s not buying thousands of armored assault vehicles for that purpose either. No, DHS is only buying all this ammo to save you money!
This response by DHS, of course, is an obvious lie. Why? Because a significant portion of the bullet purchases specify hollow point rounds. In case you didn’t know, hollow points are significantly MORE expensive than “ball” ammo (FMJ). Under the Geneva convention, hollow points are illegal to use in war because they cause far greater tissue damage, too. So they can only be used domestically, inside the United States in a civil action, not an international war.
If DHS really wanted to “significantly lower costs” on ammunition, it would have purchased FMJ rounds (full metal jacket), not hollow points. But in April of 2012, ammunition manufacturer ATK announced it had been awarded a DHS purchase contract for 450 million rounds of hollow point .40 caliber ammo. That’s almost half a billion rounds right there, and they’re all hollow point rounds.

First it was a conspiracy theory that the bullets existed… now it’s a verified fact that billions of rounds are being purchased

Infowars.com initially publicized this story. With the outstanding reporting of Kurt Nimmo, Paul Joseph Watson, Alex Jones and others, the alternative media forced this story into the mainstream.
But for most of 2012, anyone who claimed DHS was purchasing all this ammo was labeled a “conspiracy theorist” by the leftist delusional media which somehow believed that all this hardware being purchased by DHS was imaginary.
Over time, of course, as all the contracts came out and the proof was undeniable, the mainstream media was forced to admit it wasn’t a conspiracy theory after all. A Forbes.com report that called for a “national conversation” signalled a breakthrough in mainstream awareness of the issue, and it was soon followed by members of Congress demanding answers from DHS.
The cover stories collapse
The first response from DHS was that there were no bullets. They didn’t exist. The contracts were purely fictional and DHS had no intention of actually taking delivery on any bullets.
When that cover story was exposed as an obvious lie, the story shifted to its current distortion: “We bought all that ammo to save you money!” (By the way, where are the apologies to all of us who first reported the DHS ammo purchases and were called conspiracy theorists for breaking the story on now-verified facts?)
Ah, so now the bullets DO exist after all, but we should all be thankful DHS is buying all these bullets because it’s a wonderful example of fiscal responsibility, you see. Because when a government is economically on the verge of collapse, operated by criminals and destroying the liberties of the people, the most important way to “save money” is to load up on billions of rounds of ammo. It makes perfect sense, does it not?
But now the “saving money” cover story is also collapsing due to the fact that most of the bullets purchased are hollow point rounds, and hollow point rounds are the most expensive rounds you can buy. This includes hundreds of thousands of sniper rounds, by the way, which are specified in the purchase contracts as “BTHP” — meaning “Boat Tail Hollow Point.” These sniper rounds are long-range bullets with remarkable flight stability. Depending on the ballistics coefficients and muzzle velocities, some of these bullets have ranges of well over one mile.
Exactly who does DHS need to shoot with hollow point bullets at a range of one mile?
Private citizens are buying 50 million rounds EACH WEEK
According to my sources, private citizens across the USA have been buying up far larger quantities of ammo than DHS. At peak production, U.S. ammunition manufacturers can produce nearly one billion rounds of ammo each week. Most of that production goes straight to the Pentagon for military use. But roughly one-twentieth of it is available for the law enforcement and civilian markets.
That comes to 50 million rounds each week being placed on the market. Most of this is being frantically bought up by individual gun owners. Most ammo doesn’t even make it to store shelves, as full pallets are being trucked off in back lots mere minutes after they arrive at gun shops and retailers.
If these numbers are accurate — and I’m not 100% sure of their accuracy yet — this means U.S. civilians could be buying up to 2.4 billion rounds of ammo in a year’s time, outpacing even DHS ammo purchases. Even more impressively, private citizens are buying up millions of guns each month. All these hundreds of millions of rounds of ammo and millions of firearms are being hidden away until they are needed.
It doesn’t take long to realize what’s really happening here: a massive arms race is underway in America. Rest assured that gun purchasers are not buying guns just so they can turn them in. They are not buying ammo just to turn around and register it with the government. They are not buying 30-round magazines for the purpose of registering them with the criminal, traitorous lawmakers of states like Connecticut. They are buying guns and ammo in order to prepare an armed defense against a corrupt, criminal government that has abandoned the rule of law (the Constitution) and is now aggressively stripping Americans of their guaranteed fundamental rights (the Bill of Rights).
Citizens should stockpile ammo just like DHS
If it comes to a shooting war, private citizens are allies of sheriffs, veterans and many members of law enforcement, including many federal officers. Entire communities will likely band together to defend themselves against federal coercion or even UN troops attempting to overtake and occupy American cities.
Informed Americans know that stockpiling ammo is a wise activity, especially given the likely need to help arm your local sheriffs deputies who are sworn to help defend your community against tyranny. (www.OathKeepers.org) Additionally, stockpiling ammo is exactly what the government is doing, so if anybody asks why you and I are stockpiling ammo, our answer can be exactly the same as DHS: “We’re doing it to significantly lower costs by purchasing in bulk!”
Thus, the argument that individuals don’t “need” all that ammo falls flat on its face. “Need” is not a requirement in the eyes of the government. The only justification necessary is a claim to be “saving money” no matter how much ammo is being stockpiled.
The next time someone asks you why you “need” an AR-15, just reply, “I’m buying them in bulk to significantly lower costs, just like our government!” The same retort can be used to justify purchases of armored vehicles and long-range sniper rounds, too.
The left will never see the bullets coming
Shockingly, voters on the left who are terrified that individuals might stockpile ammo are mysteriously quite comfortable that DHS is doing exactly that on a much larger scale. Individuals are not to be trusted in a socialist nation, you see. Only the government can be trusted, they believe. Little do these people know that most of these DHS bullets are ultimately meant for them.
The first place DHS will set up operations will be the high-density cities, where status quo residents are surprisingly easy to be rounded up, marched to the edge of open pits, then ordered to thank their government executioners while being shot in the head with .40 caliber hollow point bullets that were “purchased in bulk to save money!” Rejoice! Mass murder has never been so affordable.
You may not think any of this could possibly happen, but then again, you probably didn’t think DHS was buying 2+ billion rounds of ammo when we first reported it. (I’m talking to newer visitors now, not long-time Natural News readers.) Like most people, you are hopelessly ignorant of reality, and you have bet your life on the lies of a criminal government that places no value whatsoever on your existence. You live in a never-ending state of denial because the zone of denial is far more comfortable than facing the truth that your own government is arming against you, amassing enough ammunition and armored assault vehicles to wage a 20-year war on the streets of America, all while gutting the Constitution and the Bill of Rights (to the cheers of the socialist left).
If you believe DHS is buying all this just for “training purposes,” you are a fool. Any organization that needs two billion rounds of ammunition to “train” is a standing army. Two billion rounds of ammunition in the hands of a corrupt, criminal government does not create “security.”
It creates an atrocity.

Biden Says Department of Homeland Security Crawling with Lesbians

WASHINGTON – With the Democratic convention drawing the bulk of the media’s attention this week, reports that a senior official at the Department of Homeland Security had resigned Saturday amid accusations of employment discrimination and sexual harassment were overlooked by the majority of news agencies. The official, Suzanne Barr, an aide to the department’s secretary, Janet Napolitano, had been on leave from her position of chief of staff at Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) after a male agent filed a lawsuit accusing her of creating a “frat house” atmosphere designed to humiliate male employees. Additional male employees came forward with their own complaints of sexual misconduct by Barr.
Early today on CBS This Morning, Vice President Biden sat down with host Gayle King and near the end of the interview he was asked about the Homeland Security story. Following is an excerpt from that interview:
GAYLE KING: Mr. Vice President, according to the Associated Press, Suzanne Barr, a senior Obama administration political appointee and longtime aide to Homeland Security Secretary, Janet Napolitano, resigned Saturday amid allegations of inappropriate sexual behavior.

JOE BIDEN: Yes, and it’s an unfortunate turn of events.
GAYLE KING: The allegations of sexual impropriety against Miss Barr include aggressive attempts to humiliate and intimidate her male counterparts.
JOE BIDEN: (After a thoughtful pause) Look, we’ve known for some time now that the Department of Homeland Security is crawling with lesbians.
Gayle King stared wide-eyed at the vice president.
JOE BIDEN: But it’s never been a concern, Gayle, because those frisky gals have done such a bang up job.
GAYLE KING: Uh… apparently Miss Barr also worked under Janet Napolitano while she was governor of Arizona, serving as her director of legislative affairs.
JOE BIDEN: Yeah, the two of them are kind of like you and Oprah.

On May 26, 2011, President Barack Obama used an Autopen to sign a four-year extension of three key provisions in the USA PATRIOT Act while in France. Why didn’t he sign the reauthorization in the US? Why was it kept secret? A provision in the Patriot Act establishes Constitutional Free Zones within a 100-miles of the boarder and coastline of the United States. The Constitutional Free zones will now exist until May 26, 2015 effectively taking away all human and Constitutional Rights putting everything in a state of anarchy. 

Since we have no Constitutional Rights and no rules governing the behavior of public employees it rendering any authority, any oath of office, any court decision that, public employees make null and void.

Good morning. I am Craig Johnson. I’m an associate professor of music at Point Loma Nazarene University in San Diego, CA. First, I want to thank you for allowing me to share my story with you. Point Loma, I’m proud to say, encourages its faculty and students to involve themselves in social justice and reconciliation issues. And it was through my involvement in one such event that my story begins.

On June 1 of this year I was privileged to participate, along with my two oldest children, in a vigil sponsored by the San Diego Foundation for Change and supported by members of the Point Loma campus community at the Border Field State Park on the U. S. border with Mexico. My involvement in this event was to demonstrate my opposition to the Federal government’s proposed construction of a dual layer border fence through this park and the nationally protected estuary and research center that are part of the grounds. One activity during the vigil was to have been what is known in some faith traditions as a “love feast” – it was to have been the sharing of food through the fence to demonstrate solidarity and hospitality between citizens of both countries. That day, however, there was a much stronger presence of Border Patrol agents, a dozen or more, than is typical at events of this nature. They informed us that if any food was passed through the fence, we would be arrested on violations of customs regulations. We took them at their word and the love feast became a love lament, with only the US citizens eating while our Mexican neighbors looked on. Incidentally, an article appeared in yesterday’s New York Times about this park and the Border Patrol agents, and it seems that they have softened their position on this considerably.

While there was a strong presence of agents at the park itself, other officers were recording license plates of all the vehicles in the parking lot, which unfortunately was a mile and a half away. In fact, one student’s car was even towed for expired registration during the event.

Six days later, on June 7, I went to Tijuana, Mexico to sing a benefit recital. On my re-entry into the U.S., I submitted my current passport to the Customs agent and was then told to freeze with both of my hands on the desk in front of me. After being asked if I had any weapons on me, I was handcuffed by Customs agents and told that I was listed as “armed and dangerous.” At that point I was escorted in front of literally hundreds of onlookers waiting to enter the U. S. and taken to a holding room where my suit coat, tie, outer shirt, belt, and shoes were removed, my pockets emptied and the contents confiscated and I was aggressively searched. This was not your typical airport security pat-down. Every inch and crack of my body was thoroughly pressed and probed. I was in complete bewilderment. I felt violated and frankly, I was embarrassed. I could not believe what was happening.

After this I was questioned about my reasons for being in Mexico, my length of stay there, and where specifically I would be returning to the U. S. After about 45 minutes I was released to collect my belongings and rejoin my friends with whom I had been in line.

I normally travel to Mexico for any reason that presents itself – escorting visitors from out of town or just going down for the sights and sounds of the country. I even worked regularly there in 2006 with Tijuana Opera and would cross the border several times per week. Never before my June 7 experience had I encountered the slightest problem.

It took me four months to muster the courage to try crossing again. I had hoped that this was a mistake and that I would be removed from “armed and dangerous” status. On October 5, I decided to go to Mexico to try re-entering in order put my mind to rest. I was hoping for the best, but prepared for the worst, and once again I was subjected to the same treatment – arrest, searching, questioning, and detainment.

I do not own firearms. I do not have a criminal record. Yet when I think of the treatment that my own government shows to me, I am alarmed. It’s frightening enough knowing that my personal and private data are being accessed with unknown consequences, but when I know what some of those consequences are, I am even more disturbed.

It took me four months to return to Mexico after June 1, not because I’m afraid of travelling outside of my own country, but rather because I’m afraid of returning home. This should not be.

Since 9/11, fear mongering has led to the belief that if one has nothing to hide, one should be happy to submit to unwarranted searches, have their phones tapped, have their emails read....just slap an Orwellian name like Patriot Act on it and it becomes law.... and that is perfectly okay if the government holds people for years without a formal charge, without being able to consult an attorney or see their families...in the name of being "secure"...this is a false sense of security that I don’t share....It’s a big deal when someone is violated like this.

Freedom isn't something I'm willing to compromise on. Is, "Land of the Free" just empty words we speak, never considering what it even means?

The first time he experiences this newly hardened US-Canada border, it takes him by surprise. It’s a freezing late December day and Matthews, a lawyer (who asked me to change his name), is on the passenger side of a car as he and three friends cross the Blue Water Bridge from Sarnia, Ontario, to the old industrial town of Port Huron, Michigan. They are returning from the Reviving the Islamic Spirit conference in Toronto, chatting and happy to be almost home when the car pulls up to the booth, where a blue-uniformed US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agent stands. The 60,000-strong CBP is the border enforcement arm of the Department of Homeland Security and includes both customs and US Border Patrol agents. What is about to happen is the furthest thing from Matthews’s mind. He’s from Port Huron and has crossed this border “a million times before.

Todd Miller: After scanning their passports and looking at a computer screen in the booth, the agent says to the driver, as Matthews tells the story:

“Sir,  turn off the vehicle, hand me the key and step out of the car.”

He hears the snap of handcuffs going around his friend’s wrists. Disoriented, he turns around and sees uniformed men kneeling behind their car, firearms drawn.

“To my disbelief, situated behind us are agents, pointing their guns.”

The CBP officer asks Matthews and the remaining passengers to get out of the car and escorts them to a waiting room. Thirty minutes later, he, too, is handcuffed and in a cell. Forty-five minutes after that another homeland security agent brings him into a room with no chairs. The agent tells him that he can sit down, but all he sees is a countertop. “Can I just stand?” he asks.

And he does so for what seems like an eternity with the door wide open, attempting to smile at the agents who pass by. “I’m trying to be nice,” is how he put it.

Finally, in a third room, the interrogation begins. Although they question Matthews about his religious beliefs and various Islamic issues, the two agents are “nice.” They ask him: Where’d you go? What kind of law do you practice? He tells them that a former law professor was presenting a paper at the annual conference, whose purpose is to revive “Islamic traditions of education, tolerance and introspection.” They ask if he’s received military training abroad. This, he tells me, “stood out as one of their more bizarre questions.” When the CBP lets him and his friends go, he still thinks it was a mistake.

However, Lena Masri of the Council of American Islamic Relations-Michigan (CAIR-MI) reports that Matthews’s experience is becoming “chillingly” commonplace for Michigan’s Arab and Muslim community at border crossings. In 2012, CAIR-MI was receiving five to seven complaints about similar stops per week. The detainees are all Arab, all male, all questioned at length. They are asked about religion, if they spend time at the mosque and who their Imam is.

According to CAIR-MI accounts, CBP agents repeatedly handcuff these border-crossers, often brandish weapons, conduct invasive, often sexually humiliating body searches and detain people for from two to twelve hours. Because of this, some of the detainees have lost job opportunities or jobs, or given up on educational opportunities in Canada. Many are now afraid to cross the border to see their families who live in Canada. (CAIR-MI has filed alawsuit against the CBP and other governmental agencies.)

Months later, thinking there is no way this can happen again, Matthews travels to Canada and crosses the border, this time alone, on the Blue Water Bridge to Port Huron. Matthews still hadn’t grasped the seismic changes in Washington’s attitude toward our northern border since 9/11. Port Huron, his small hometown, where a protest group, Students for a Democratic Society, first famously declared themselves against racism and alienation in 1962, is now part of the “frontline” in defense of the “homeland.” As a result, Matthews finds himself a casualty of a new war, one that its architects and proponents see as a permanent bulwark against not only non-citizens generally but also people like Matthews from “undesirable” ethno-religious groups or communities in the United States.

While a militarized enforcement regime has long existed in the US-Mexico borderlands, its far more intense post-9/11 version is also proving geographically expansive. Now, the entire US perimeter has become part of a Fortress USA mentality and a lockdown reality. Unlike on our southern border, there is still no wall to our north on what was once dubbed the “longest undefended border in the world.” But don’t let that fool you. The US-Canadian border is increasingly a national security hotspot watched over by drones, surveillance towers and agents of the Department of Homeland Security

In a video shown to reporters at a national press conference event Wednesday, retired San Diego social worker Vince Peppard complained that he and his wife were stopped at a checkpoint on a road east of San Diego on I-94, many miles after crossing back into the United States with tiles he'd bought in Mexico.

When he refused to let the Customs and Border Protection officer search his car, the officer led him to a bench, called in the contraband dog and then "ransacked" his car.

"I didn't feel like I was inside the U.S.," Peppard said, calling the search on the side of the road embarrassing. "I felt like I was in a B-movie with Nazis asking for my papers."

ACLU attorney Chris Calabrese is certain there are more people who have been negatively affected than have complained.

As an example, he cited Seattle's domestic ferries, where DHS agents ask passengers for ID to check their citizenship and use license plate readers.

"The people who live on these islands are undergoing this extra scrutiny just when they are going to get their groceries," Calabrese said.

Customs and Border Protection Cilberti's says he did not specifically look into Peppard's case, but said that refusing a search does not create probable cause for a search and that if a CBP agent searched his car, it's because their experience and training made them believe they had probable cause.

The ACLU hopes that Congress will include changes to the border zone in traveler privacy protection bills that focus on prohibiting suspicion-less searches and seizures of laptops at the border. Congress is currently out of session and would not move on any legislation until sometime in 2009 at the earliest.

This scene is not as far-fetched as you might want to believe. The government is turning vast swaths of our country into a "Constitution-Free Zone" in which U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) is allowed to exercise extraordinary authority that would not normally be permitted under the Constitution. The government says that "the border"- where there is a longstanding view that the Constitution does not fully apply- actually stretches 100 miles inland from the nation's "external boundary." And increasingly, we are seeing DHS vigorously utilize that authority.

Today we held a press conference at the National Press Club here in D.C. to try to draw attention to this problem ? and the fact that, as we showed, nearly two-thirds of the U.S. population live within this "Constitution-Free Zone." That?s 197.4 million people.

We calculated this using the most recent, 2007 numbers from the U.S. Census, and released a map showing the cities and states that are enveloped by this zone. It includes some of the largest metropolitan areas in the country: New York City, Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles and Portland, Oregon. States that are completely within this Constitution-Free Zone include Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Hawaii, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Hampshire, New Jersey, and Rhode Island. When you say "border," they think "all of New England."

CBP has been setting up checkpoints far inland - on highways in states such as California, Texas and Arizona, and at ferry terminals in Washington State. Typically, the agents ask drivers and passengers about their citizenship. People are also reporting that even after they provide passports or state driver's licenses, CBP continues to interrogate them and try to pressure them into permitting a search.

• EPIC Obtains New Details on PATRIOT Act: As the result of a Freedom of Information Act request, EPIC has obtained more than 650 pages of documents related to the PATRIOT Act. EPIC had requested information related to the FBI's abuse of PATRIOT Act authorities and documents concerning the 2009 sunset of the PATRIOT Act. The documents disclosed by the FBI include training presentations, answers to questions from Senators Leahy and Specter, and a list of reporting requirements. In an answer to Senator Leahy, the FBI stated that while it would discontinue the use of exigent letters, which the Inspector General had previously noted as a frequent source of abuse, the agency planned to continue its use of the emergency disclosures provision of the Electronic Communications Privacy Act. Common Law Court puts down the 100 Mile Constitution Free Zone in the 3rd Circuit Common Law Court on King County Washington.
